Careers at the National Maternity Hospital

Introduction

As the largest maternity hospital in Europe and tertiary centre for Ireland, the hospital is a centre of excellence with approximately 8,500 deliveries per year with a bed complement of 200. The busy gynaecological unit is a national referral centre for gynaecological cancer. The neonatal unit is also a national referral centre and participates in the national neonatal transport programme. The laboratory provides a comprehensive service contributing to the care of perinatal, neonatal, antenatal and gynaecology patients. The Community Midwifery Service offers women the options of Domino, Early Transfer Home and Home Births. All activities are managed within a strong clinical governance framework and employees are centrally involved in quality improvement initiatives around the hospital.

The Hospital is a university teaching hospital with affiliations to University College Dublin (UCD) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). There is an active under-graduate teaching programme in the hospital with students from both colleges in attendance. The four year pre-registration degree for midwifery and eighteen month post registration Higher Diploma in Midwifery is run in partnership with UCD. A fifteen month Higher Diploma in Neonatal Nursing organised jointly with the Faculty of Nursing, RCSI is based in our tertiary referral Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
