National Newborn Hearing Screening

Newborn Hearing Screening is offered to all Newborn babies in Ireland.  The aim is to identify hearing loss as early as possible.  This screen involves an automated machine, specifically designed for Newborn Babies; this will be carried out by a hearing screener during your stay in hospital. We aim to have the hearing screen completed by the time your baby is discharged from hospital.

1 to 2 babies in every thousand are born with permanent childhood hearing loss.  Early identification is known to be important for the development of the child.  It also means that support and information can be provided to parents at an early stage.
