Your Appointment

Your Appointment

You are welcome to bring a support person with you to your appointment.

Patients under the age of 16 must attend with a parent or guardian.

While we will always do our best to keep to appointment times, occasionally delays can happen due to an emergency or unexpected event. Staff will try their best to notify you and arrange another appointment if necessary.

At your first appointment as well as discussing your reason for attending your appointment, your doctor will ask you questions about your health, including medical and surgical history, sexual health history, lifestyle/social history and family history. This ensures any investigations and treatment options are specific to your needs.

An examination is often necessary. This may include a pelvic or vaginal examination depending on your symptoms. Samples for testing may be taken if required, for example screening for infection.

A plan of care will be discussed at this appointment. This may include changes in medication, further investigations such as an ultrasound scan, a procedure, surgery or referral to another service. After your appointment a letter will be sent to your GP with details of your visit, including plan of care going forward and any recommendations.

Before you leave

At the end of your appointment you should know the answers to following questions:

  • What happens next?
  • Where can I get more information?
  • Who do I contact if I have more questions?
Test Results

If you have had bloods, urine samples or swabs sent for analysis we will contact you only if treatment is required.

Please do not ring the department for these results as they will not be given out over the phone.

The results of tests for example ultrasound scans will be discussed at a follow up appointment or the consultant may write to your GP.
