Hospital Fees and Charges

If you choose to be a private or semi-private patient, you are liable for all costs associated with your care at The National Maternity Hospital.

Private Maternity Care - Fees and Charges

Most women who choose to attend our private Consultants use private health insurance to cover as much of the costs as possible. As there are a large number of plans that health insurance providers offer with varying levels of cover for maternity patients we advise you to contact your insurance provider by phone or preferably in writing, to ensure your cover is appropriate. If your private health insurance does not cover all the costs of your care in The National Maternity Hospital you will be expected to pay any shortfall in full.

It is important to note that there may be a 52 week waiting period applied by some insurers before you will be covered by them for maternity services.

The National Maternity Hospital operates a direct payment system for inpatient charges with the following companies: VHI, Laya, Irish Life.

Fees and Charges

Private Consultants Fee: €2500 -  €5000 by arrangement with your chosen Consultant.

Accommodation Charges:

Single Occupancy room per night: €1000 (when available and if covered by your insurance)

Multi-occupancy room per night: €813

Day Case: €407 (per day) should you need a procedure during pregnancy or postnatally.

Accommodation rates may increase on 1st January subject to Department of Health guidance. There is also a possible annual increase in medical fees on the 1st of July. The price charged will be applicable to the rate at the time of admission to hospital. During busy periods, we are unable to guarantee you will be offered a private room following birth. If this is the case, you will be accommodated on another ward until a private room becomes available.

Health Insurance Companies generally cover a three night stay for a vaginal birth or five nights for a caesarean section birth. This includes any nights on the Antenatal Ward or on the Labour and Birthing Unit before birth. If your medical team decide it is medically necessary for you to stay longer than this, it is generally covered under insurance, although you will need to confirm this with your insurer directly.

If you do not have health insurance, please contact your consultant’s private secretary and they will be happy to advise you on how to pay your fees and charges directly.
