Private maternity care

Welcome to The National Maternity Hospital Private Rooms

Choosing private maternity care means that you will receive personalised maternity care from your chosen Consultant. Women often tell us that one of the benefits they enjoy most from choosing private care is seeing the same Consultant throughout their pregnancy and having them present at their birth. You can choose Private maternity care, whether you have a normal, medium or high-risk pregnancy. If you have a normal or medium risk pregnancy, you will be on the assisted care pathway or if you have a high risk pregnancy you will be on the specialised care pathway.

At The National Maternity Hospital we are proud to have expert, specialist Consultants who lead the way both nationally and internationally in maternal and fetal health.

Consultants offering private care are listed below along with each Private Secretary's contact number. If you choose to be a private patient, please contact your chosen Consultant's Private Secretary directly to book in. To find out more about our Consultants, please visit our Meet the Doctors page.

Your Antenatal Appointments
  • You will be seen by your chosen Consultant for all your antenatal visits and your 6-week postnatal check in the professional comfortable and relaxed surroundings of our private rooms at Number 60 Mount Street, conveniently located next to The National Maternity Hospital. Your Consultant will advise you of the approximate schedule of visits at your booking visit.

  • Some of our Consultants offer the option of shared care under the Maternity and Infant Scheme. This would mean that instead of seeing your Consultant at all of your visits, your antenatal appointments are shared between your consultant and your GP. Your Consultant will advise you of the approximate schedule of visits at your booking visit. This schedule is subject to change depending on individual circumstances as your pregnancy progresses.

  • If you have a high risk pregnancy or develop a problem during pregnancy, you will be seen more often by your Consultant.
Your Ultrasounds
  • Your dating scan (at 12 – 14 weeks) and fetal anomaly scan (at 20 to 22 weeks) will take place in the private Merrion Ultrasound Clinic located at No 60 Mount Street.  Merrion Ultrasound Clinic is unique from other existing private ultrasound services in that it is a medically led and sonographer facilitated.  Merrion Ultrasound clinic offers a high level of comfort and privacy. 42″ screens in each ultrasound room allow you and your partner to see your scan clearly and in complete comfort.
  • In some cases, your Consultant may opt to carry out your dating scan (at 12-14 weeks) in their private rooms with your fetal anomaly scan taking place in the Merrion Ultrasound Clinic.
  • You will have a fetal wellbeing (bedside) ultrasound scan at each visit with your Consultant.
Your Inpatient Care
