Diabetes

The  multidisciplinary NMH Diabetes Team includes an Endocrinologist, Obstetricians, Dieticians and Midwives who work together to provide diabetes care to all pregnant women with Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes. The team provide a comprehensive holistic approach to ensure a high quality and safe pregnancy with regular care and support to deal with the range of challenges diabetes women have during pregnancy and post delivery.

The Diabetes specialist midwives are the first point of contact and play a pivotal role in providing education for self care and management with indivualised care during pregnancy.

Women who have already been diagnosed with diabetes should attend the diabetes service from early pregnancy. You may need to commence on either insulin or tablets or, if you are already taking insulin, the levels may need to be adjusted regularly during your pregnancy. Good control of blood sugar levels is essential during pregnancy.

If you have diabetes or had Gestational Diabetes in the past, please contact the diabetes care specialist midwife as soon as you know you are pregnant to arrange an appointment.
