Some babies continue to attend the hospital as outpatients. These include babies who were admitted to the NICU or babies who were discovered to have certain medical conditions while on the postnatal wards. Should your baby need to return to this clinic you will be given an appointment. The appointment date may be arranged before your discharge; if this isn’t possible it will then be sent to you at home. For everybody's benefit and knowing the pressures of a new baby at home, the clinic operates on a strict appointment system.

Cancelling an Appointment
If you are unable to attend on the date scheduled for you (e.g. due to illness or personal reasons) it is really important that you contact the Clinic secretary as soon as possible to reschedule as this appointment can then be allocated to someone else. Please note that it may be some time before another outpatient appointment becomes available.
Outpatient Appointment Text Messaging Reminder Service
NMH provides an outpatient appointment Text Messaging Reminder Service. The clinic contact number is provided in the text message for parents/guardians to ring if they cannot attend their appointment. This service is reliant on the accurate capture of the parents/guardians mobile phone number at discharge.
Emergency Referrals
The hospital provides a number of emergency walk-in appointments. If you have a query regarding your baby, it is recommended that you contact the Public Health Nurse or your GP. If the Public Health Nurse or GP wish for you to be seen by NMH then a referral letter should be issued and an appointment will be made or in the case of an emergency you can call into the NMH. The hospital is not funded to provide an emergency service outside of clinic hours, however, if your baby requires urgent assistance, please contact us and we will advise you on the best course of action: Tel (01) 637 3100.
The hospital service is only available up to 6 weeks post delivery. If your baby is more than 6 weeks old you should contact your GP or one of the Children’s Hospitals.
