What is Midwifery Led Care?

Midwifery Led Care is a model of care where a woman’s midwife is the lead healthcare professional responsible for the planning, organisation and delivery of a woman’s care throughout her pregnancy, birth and the early parenting period.

The Midwifery Led model of care promotes and advocates for non-intervention in normal childbirth and is the most appropriate model of care for women with a normal risk pregnancy. Midwifery-led care provides continuity of care and care provider(s) – the aim is that women see the same midwife or team of midwives for all of their appointments. If you are pregnant and interested in Midwifery Led Care, The National Maternity Hospital offers a number of options; midwifery led antenatal clinics in the hospital and in the community, the midwifery led Domino and Homebirth Service and the midwifery led Early Transfer Home Service.
